In today’s world there is a
pressing global climate crisis. We are depleting the earth’s resources and
polluting the environment so heavily that we have begun to see irreversible
climate changes in the form of global warming. 2015 was the hottest year in recorded
history; we had to search as far north as the poles to try to even find snow,
and what was even scarier is that places as far north as Juneau, Alaska were
experiencing temperatures averaging in the mid-thirties for the month of
December (That is above freezing temperature!). It does not take an expert to
know that Alaska should be much colder in the winter. These rising temperature
will result in the melting of polar icecaps, rising ocean levels, and depletion
of habitat for wildlife. This is only the most obvious issue as well. There is
direct environmental destruction going on with the depletion of forests all
across the world, the pollution and overharvesting of our oceans making dead
zones where wildlife once used to thrive. There is much more going on as well,
which would take me a whole essay to just list and talk about. And you may ask
then why do we keep polluting, and the answer is simple. We pollute in order to
produce things that humans need for their every day lives in this new modern age.
If all these things that we do to
pollute the environment lead to things that we need then how can we help the
environment and stop polluting? Well we need to try to identify products that
aren’t necessary and search for a creative, innovative, and green solution in
order to eliminate them from our lives and eliminate their environmental
impact. One such product that I will seek to address, through my company Paperless Solutions Inc., is the paper
receipt. Paper receipts are the most unnecessary use of paper in the modern
economy. After many interviews I have discovered that most people never use the
receipts printed, and most stores today (Primarily Restaurants) will ask if you
want your receipt and should you say no then they will just throw it away. This
is a huge problem because paper receipts actually have a huge economic impact
and it has been discovered that they are even harmful to a person’s health! Paper
receipts account for the destruction of over one million gallons of water, burning
of 250 million gallons of oil, and one billion gallons of water consumed every
year. All this generates over 1.5 BILLION pounds of waste in the USA alone, all
for something you’re probably never going to use. Why then are we using paper receipts?
Well the answer is that there currently is no alternative to them and we need a
way to provide proof of purchase so people can make returns, and help track
their spending. However with the technology we have today physical receipts
have become obsolete; we are capable of designing and implementing a much
better and greener system.
Through my budding company Paperless Solutions Inc. I will seek to
provide a technological alternative to a paper receipt. My idea is to provide a
mobile app connected to a website that will simultaneously scan and store
receipts, as a digital file, into an online cloud-based storage system. My system
will allow customers to access these receipts through a secure online account
used via the app or a separate online website. The stored receipts on the app
will work very similarly to a normal paper receipt, containing all the desired information
however in a non-waste creating digital package. The receipts will be scanned
through a digital program either installed onto a separate machine or onto
preexisting machines that are able to scan digital signals, much like the Apple
and Samsung Pay card scanners. I do not know which of these will be more
effective to use but that will be figured out through cost-analysis and
marketing strategies.
The digital receipt, although in
existence, is not currently efficient. Companies such as Square, Inc. offer a “no receipt” and “email receipt” option along
with the traditional receipt. Although those two options do save paper it is
not convenient for people who need to use receipts. The email receipt leads to
a cluttered email inbox and a difficult to access receipt; if a person receives
lots of emails then this would be a very undesirable option, not to mention
they would have to type in their email address after every purchase. The “no
receipt” option is much more convenient as far as time saving and clutter goes
but it does not provide any proof of purchase. With my alternative the shopper
will be able to have an app dedicated solely to the storage an access of
receipts, which will categorize and organize receipts in a way that we find
most efficient (I am not sure whether this will lead to storing the receipts categorially
or in chronological order according to date of purchase, but it will definitely
include a search bar option), which will also have a quick and simple use
simply by opening the app and tapping the phone to the scanner (using much the
same technology as Apple pay). And if the customer does not want to save this
receipt he always has the option to not scan at all. In either case we have the
potential to save up to 1.5 billion pounds of waste every year. And one of the
best parts is that because it is cloud based storage the customer will never
have to waste space on their phone.
However an app like this would
require many people to use it at once, and for it to be offered in many places.
For regular customers, downloading an app they will only use once or maybe
twice a week would not be useful. However if this app were to work directly
with a large corporation such as Walmart and be implemented quickly then this
would incentivize millions of people to use this app saving tons and tons of
waste yearly.
This app has great potential to
take one step closer to saving the environment and making the world a better
place. Pollution caused by humans can slowly be decreased with the help of
modern technology, all without sacrificing our lifestyles. All it takes is
people to be committed to being green.
Hi Nahel,
ReplyDeleteThis was a great post with a great bit of attention to detail! Unrelated to this specific post and your strategy, I just want to say your business idea is quite genius. There was an app that I once used called mobile keychain and it held all your loyal rewards and membership numbers on the phone so you didn't have to carry around a bunch of cards, this mirrors that idea and would be a great expansion mechanism if you wanted to expand your business (providing there is no patent).
I think if you cited some pollution facts from a credible source, this would really hit home your delivery.

Great post Nahel! I think paperless receipts are a great idea! Honestly, if given the option, I never even take my receipts. And, when I do, there are only two things that I do with it. Either one, I throw it away two seconds after having it in my hand, or two, I stuff it to the bottom of my purse where I never see it again. Either way, it is completely useless to me, so this is a concept that I think would work very well! I would share my post but I did not complete this assignment in time. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteNahel,
ReplyDeleteI loved that you gave a lot of background information about the environment before discussing your idea. It pulled me in and got me thinking about my impact on the world. I tried to do that in my blog post too, getting people to think about their own skin and problems they have had with acne.
Paperless receipts would be amazing and I would love to have records on hand especially on my phone. I sometimes need to look at a receipt only to realize I tossed it in the trash or didn't get one at all. Great work.

Hey Nahel!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I am commenting due to the fact that the post I was assigned was not completed.
I love your business idea! I think a huge marketing factor for your business is the eco friendly aspect. Companies are always looking for ways to reduce waste and to save money. I think you should definitely start by advertising to these big companies. You need them to adopt your product before consumers will find the product useful. You could also advertise at places like H&R Block. The main time people need these receipts are around tax time. Good luck!

Hello Nahel,
ReplyDeleteEvery time I read your posts regarding your product I see two things: consistency and commitment. These are two fundamental traits that will essentially propel your eco-friendly idea into the stratosphere. It was great reading your post because I can genuinely tell that you care about earth's natural resources being depleted and how global warming is affecting us in so many ways. Your idea provides relief for many businesses that are willing to part ways with paper and, for that, I can tell you will have no problem gathering alliances in order to grow your initiative. Great post!

Hey Nahel,
ReplyDeleteI love your business idea; it's unfortunate that our environment is deteriorating and current business practices (for all) haven't been in the best intentions for the imprint left upon the environment. It's good to see that someone is worried about that and making an effort to move forward with progress. The only issue I see is with people getting their phones out and turning on apps in a timely manner; it could cause for backup in comparison to the traditional receipt, but if implemented in a similar fashion to Apple/Samsung Pay, or even alongside it, you might have a concept that could grow.

Hi Nahel,
ReplyDeleteI think your product is such an intelligent and well thought-out invention, especially since it benefits the environment and will alter the way consumers will handle receipts and stores as well. I know your company does have a competitor, but that was a very smart way to differentiate your company versus Square, Inc. I think the best way to go about expanding your product is to get it patent. Check out my blog when you can: http://kmglickman.blogspot.com/2016/03/venture-concept-no-1.html
Nahel, I am super impressed with your venture concept! I love how you started telling a story of global warming and pollution, because it got me thinking "where is he going with this? I need to pay attention to find out". The transition into your company and actually product was also very smooth. I agree that paper reciepts are complete outdated, I have a giant pile of them that I don't even use. What I liked most was the section where you mention the "no receipts and email receipts"; with this info you immediately shut down those who say "well we already have paperless" and you explained why they are dysfunctional and why your mobile app is clearly the best solution. Loved it overall. I did not complete the assignment unfortunately but feel free to check out some of my blog posts http://lovetravellives.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteHey Nahel,
ReplyDeleteFirst, I believe that the cause of wide scale polluting are peoples wants not their needs. But to the app itself, I think it is a very viable option and another step that we should take towards a eco-friendly economy. I am not sure where you got your sources for the impact on receipts, but I think you should include them to add more credibility to your venture concept 2. Keep up the good work and check out what I wrote about my venture: http://goobirs.blogspot.com/2016/03/venture-concept-no1-week-12.html
Nahel,
ReplyDeleteYour idea is something that I think would be helpful in turning our society into an eco-friendly world. I liked how you provided great detail in your starting paragraph, which helped give me a better understanding of what was to be mention in your blog. The mention of global warming was something that specifically caught my eye, where as I have done research on global warming and am extremely worried about the future of this world due to the wide scale polluting. This will be huge in reducing receipts that are unnecessary due to the advanced technology where everything is mobile now. I did not do this assignment, but if you have time I would appreciate it if you would check out my blog:http://pljordan1994.blogspot.com
This idea is truly a new idea and would be revolutionary. I believe that your company would be more successful if it sold its idea to different companies you would make a lot of money. Overall paperless ideas would be extremely hard to start up and store with technology we have its possible. Apple would be a great place for this to start since they basically do everything on iphone already at the store. Check out my blog at http://michaelduellent.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteHi Nahel, I really enjoyed your blog post. I thought it was really interesting how much thought you put into it. I'm still a little confused about how your system would work if a customer purchased something using cash. Overall it's really cool concept and I can't wait to see more on it.
